Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu set up N2bn relief fund to the victims of the explosion which occurred at Abule Ado area of Festac, during the inspection at the explosion site on Monday, 16, 2020.
This funding is said to help cushion the effects of the loss of property worth billions of naira to the affected residents in Abule Ado area, the Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat and members of the State Executive Council also arrived the scene to carry out on-the-spot assessment of the tragic incident.
“To give immediate relief and support to the victims of the disaster, I have set up a N2 billion Relief Fund to be chaired by Dr. Obafemi Hamzat. The state government has put in N250m into the fund immediately.
“This incident is certainly beyond what government can independently pull off and we will count on your support to contribute to this fund as we work to provide succor for the victims of this unfortunate incident.” Sanwo-Olu said.
The Governor commiserated with the victims, and ordered the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) to immediately release safety materials to residents of the area.
A fact-finding Committee headed by the Deputy Governor has equally been set up to probe the incident and the committee is expected to submit its report in two weeks.
According to Sanwo-Olu, “We are working with NEMA, NNPC and other agencies to make life easier for everyone affected in the tragic incident at Abule Ado which claimed lives and caused extensive property damage. I offer my condolences to everyone affected.
“I have instructed the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency to immediately release personal safety materials to the people living around the area especially to first responders and all safety workers at ground zero. We will continue to monitor the situation.”
