Presidency orders NAF to bomb Zamfara, Niger, Kaduna bandits

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has ordered the Nigeria Air Force to deploy fighter jets against kidnappers, bandits and cattle rustlers said to be terrorising communities in Niger State.

The communities are situated around the Dogon Gona forest, which serves as a hideout for the attackers, Vanguard reported.

The forest stretches from Niger through Kaduna to Zamfara states, according to a State House statement by Buhari’s spokesman, Mr Garba Shehu, on Sunday.

The Presidency observed that the attackers had claimed many lives, saying Buhari saw the development as “a disaster for the nation.”

It added that the deployment of air power was to assist the police and troops to contain the bandits.

In line with this directive, the Nigerian Air Force is setting up refuelling facilities in  Minna, Niger State, to support the aircraft operations, giving assurances that given the improved weather conditions, a major exercise to ‘visually acquire targets and launch attacks will soon follow,” it said.

The Presidency stated further that the Niger State Police Command also supported the air power because of the difficult terrain of the affected areas that did not allow for easy access by ground operations.

The police command in Niger State has equally given assurances that the planned dedicated air raids to complement the police helicopter gun ship operations remain the best approach given the lack of motorised roads in the areas constantly under attack,” the statement added.

Investors’ lose confidence in Oko Oloyun Investment Scheme “Option C”

Investors Lay Siege on Oko Oloyun’s Office, Demand for Their Money

Just less than 48 hours after the death of Alhaji Fatai Yusuf, investors stormed his office to demand for the money they invested in his Ponzi scheme.

Oko Oloyun, a popular Lagos-based trado-medical expert, was murdered on Thursday around 4:30pm on the road while travelling to Iseyin, Oyo State. He was reportedly attacked by some hoodlums at Igboora. His corpse was deposited at the mortuary of Igbo-Ora General Hospital.

Following his demise, investors, who invested money in his Ponzi scheme, known as “Option C” stormed the Head office of his company to know their fate.

The investors were the more confused as his two offices at Egba Idowu along Igando road in Lagos were shutdown with no one to provide information to the investors.

The investors, however, vowed to take drastic measures if a statement was not issued by the organization as soon as possible.

Just like the day MMM folded up, the investors of “Option C” programme narrated how much they had invested and insisted they could not afford to lose their hard-earned money.

An investor, who chose to be called Emmanuel explained that Option C is a money-making programme that promised a 10% return in two months.

Emmanuel, who was trembling while speaking, added that he invested in the scheme in July 2019 and had only received returns once, contrary to the agreement of two months which was stated.

Mrs Bunmi (first name withheld), a retired teacher, who was clearly in shock, stated that she had invested millions having joined the programme in December 2018. She said she had only received N500,000 from her investment and that she was not sure of her fate with the death of Oko Oloyun.

While expressing fear with her documents at hand, she added that she filed to pull out after inconsistency in payment but rescinded her decision when she was told that she could not get her investment back in full.

Mr Azeez, another investor, said he invested N1 million in September 2019 and had decided to pull out after he was not paid in November. He, however, vowed to pursue his profit with all his ability.

Mrs Bisola (second name withheld) said she invested the money sent to her by her military husband who is fighting insurgents in North East. She said she could not afford to lose the money. She urged the management to speak up and address the investment programme issue quickly.

Mrs. Sulaimon, an investor, said she aborted her trip to travel down from Badagry to Igando when she had about the assassination of Oko Oloyun.

She noted with tears that she had invested a lot and could not afford to lose her investment. She was however optimistic that the returns would be paid after meeting her co-investors who cheered her up.

However, in the midst of the lamentation, some investors who had visited the house of the late Oko Oloyun in Lagos alleged that they were denied access by the security men, which says “Alhaja said we should not allow anybody come in, they are all in Ibadan.”

After the outcry, the investors agreed among themselves to visit the house of the deceased in Lagos during the Fidau prayers on the eighth day to demand their returns.

However, a security man at Oko Oloyun’s Egan Idowu office alleged that one of the rooms in the head office was intentionally burnt by unknown men prior to Oko Oloyun’s death.

He said the workers who were on duty had been arrested.

The Commissioner of Police Oyo State Police Command, CP. Shina T. Olukolu has promised to bring to justice the culprits involved in the killing of Alhaji Fatai Yussuf.
Alhaji Yussuf a.k.a ‘Oko Oloyun’ was reportedly to have been shot dead on Thursday 23rd January, 2020 by unknown gunmen.
According to a statement released on Friday by SP. Fadeyi Olugbenga, Police Public Relations Officer, the Oyo State Police Command is making every necessary effort to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.
The Commissioner explained that the report was received by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO Igbo-ora that around Akeroro Area on the Abeokuta/Igbo-ora/Iseyin road, the 2-car convoy of the deceased was allegedly ambushed shortly after passing through five different Police Stop and Search teams along the route by yet to be identified assailants who fired at the moving vehicles on the road from the thick forest.
“The 2-man armed escorts of Policemen protecting the deceased engaged the assailants, but they managed to escape back into the forest after a single shot had hit the deceased who died later of his bullet injuries,” he said.

In addition to other possible motives, a plausible nexus is therefore being suspected between the fire incident and the attack on the deceased. Meanwhile, some of the staff and his two (2) Police escorts are being questioned by a team of crack detectives from the homicide section of State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID Iyaganku, Ibadan with a view of finding and apprehending the fleeing suspects who wrecked the heinous act.”

Amnesty International Tasks Lagos Government to Stop Forced Evictions In State

Amnesty International, has told the Lagos State Government to end the violent and unlawful evictions that rendered many residents of Tarkwa Bay, a waterfront community in Lagos, homeless.

On January 21 at about 8:00am, personnel of the Nigerian Navy resorted to assault and shooting during the evictions at Tarkwa Bay.

The authorities continued with the forced evictions the next day, in what appears to be a brazen disregard for the safety and security of the affected people, as well as their rights to housing among others.

“What is happening at Tarkwa Bay, Lagos is a violation of human government rights.

“It is unacceptable that the Nigerian Government are evicting people in the most violent manner and destroying their homes without genuine consultations, adequate notice, alternative accommodation or access to remedies,” said Osai Ojigho, Director Amnesty International Nigeria.

“The attacks on poor communities of Lagos must end. Throwing many families into endless misery is not the best way of addressing allegations of crime and urban planning failures of the authorities. We call for a halt to ongoing forced evictions,” she added.

Spate of unlawful evictions in Lagos have surged since last.

For example, in November 2019, nearly 1500 residents of Second Badagry community in Lagos were forcibly evicted.

Similarly, on January 4, 2020, about 3000 residents of Okun Glass Village, Ilaase, were violently evicted by personnel of the Nigerian Navy.

Several other informal communities in Lagos live with perpetual threats of forced evictions.

“ He added that while the Port Health Services unit of Federal Ministry of Health had been placed on alert and had heightened screening measures at points of entry, Nigerians could maintain some simple hygiene measures to keep safe.

He advised Nigerians to adhere to the following measures to protect themselves:

• Wash your hands regularly with soap under running water

• Cover your mouth and nose properly with handkerchief or tissue paper when sneezing and/or coughing. You may also cough into your elbow if a handkerchief is not available.

• Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing
