BREAKING: Appeal Court Sack Kano Governor Yusuf, Declares APC Candidate Winner
Court of Appeal, siting in Abuja, today, Friday 17th, 2023, sack the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) Abba Yusuf, as Governor of Kano State, while it uphold the candidate of All Progressive Party (APC) as Governor of the state.
The Abuja Division of the Appeal Court has sacked Abba K. Yusuf as the governor of Kano state. The Court further ruled that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was not a member of the NNPP as at the time the elections were conducted and is therefore not qualified to contest for the seat, says the tribunal was wrong not to have disqualified the appellant (Governor Yusuf).
The Appeal court ruled that Abba is not qualified, and indeed, not qualified to contest election under the umbrella of NNPP and the tribunal was wrong for not disqualifying him.
The court in its ruling declared the candidate of the APC winner of the Kano state governorship election.
Recall that in the March 18, 2023 election, Abba Kabir Yusuf was declared the winner by the Independent National Electronic Electoral Commission (INEC) with 1,019,602 votes, surpassing Nasiru Gawuna’s 890,705 votes. However, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken the matter to the Tribunal, alleging electoral malpractice.
Subsequently, a three-man panel, including Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay, along with two other judges, removed Yusuf from office on September 20, 2023, after declaring 165,663 of his votes invalid due to the lack of signatures or stamps from the Independent National Electoral Commission.
