IGP Reactivate Tinted Glass Permit, Announced Enforcement Date
The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, re-announced to the general public that the Nigeria Police Officers would commence the suspended tinted glass permit application after due consultation with human rights activists and concerned Nigerians about the implementation and enforcement of the tinted glass permit.
The initial 30-day grace period was approved and effective from May 1, 2025, to June 1, 2025, within which motorists are expected to comply. Civil liberty organizations held a meeting with the Police boss and appealed that the enforcement should be suspended, citing public outcry. The IGP noted that the tinted glass permit enforcement will be reviewed and hence suspended until further notice.
According to a press statement released on Saturday, 14 June 2025, by Nigerian Police Force Headquarters Spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, he noted that the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has approved an extension of the grace period for the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit requirement to 12 August 2025.
“This extension comes on the heels of several concerns and feedback expressed by members of the public regarding the reactivation of the digital Tinted Glass Permit application process. In line with our commitment to delivering transparent, inclusive, and citizen-focused policing, the Force wishes to affirm that it has not ignored the voices of Nigerians. Rather, these voices have been instrumental in guiding ongoing reviews of the process to ensure it remains user-friendly, secure, and accessible to all.”
Nigerian police personnel will commence enforcement at the end of this extended grace period from 13 August 2025, while officers found engaging in unprofessional conduct such as extortion or harassment in the course of enforcement will be decisively dealt with in accordance with extant disciplinary procedures.
The extension of enforcement is also intended to give room for additional enhancements and refinements to the application process, ensuring that no member of the public is unduly disadvantaged.
Adejobi said the NPF is actively working to simplify and improve both the physical and contactless application options, including enhanced verification mechanisms and streamlined procedures to reduce delays and eliminate undue inconveniences.
Members of the public are reminded that the authorized platform for the application and renewal of the Tinted Glass Permit is accessible via http://www.possap.gov.ng. Citizens are also encouraged to report all unauthorized or hidden charges, as well as extortion during the application or biometric capturing process, to the appropriate Police authorities, including via the dedicated hotline: 09169967000.
He concluded by saying the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to public safety, digital innovation, and continuous improvement in service delivery and appreciates the cooperation and patience of the Nigerian people as these reforms are carried out.
