Ozoro Kingdom Leadership Statement on S*xual Violence Video, Police Arrest Community Head, Five Others
In response to the public outcry on a trending story on various social media about women being sexually harassed and assaulted at a festival in Ozoro, Delta State, the leadership of Ozoro Kingdom wishes to address the general public and correct the wrong impression circulating on social media regarding events that occurred on Thursday, 19th March 2026.
The leadership of the kingdom debunks the ra*e allegation and wishes to clearly state that reports circulating on social media alleging that rape and widespread atrocities occurred during the festival are false and misleading because no incidents of rape were recorded.
Lagosspy NG obtained an official press statement from Odio (Chief) Berkley Asiafa, President General, Ozoro Kingdom, and Prince Obaro Egware, Secretary General.
Ozoro, Kingdom, clarifying the misleading reports on social media. The President and Secretary General explained that Ozoro Kingdom is made up of five traditional communities, each with its distinct customs, traditions, and festivals.
“On the said date, Uruamudhu Community celebrated one of its ancient festivals known as the Alue-Do Festival.
The Alue-Do Festival is traditionally regarded as a festival of fertility. It is widely believed to be a cultural practice that brings blessings of children to individuals or couples experiencing difficulty in childbirth. As part of this long-standing tradition, certain symbolic practices are observed, including the act of playfully dragging and pouring sand on married individuals who are yet to have children, as a cultural expression believed to invoke fertility.”
However, it has come to our attention that some youths misinterpret and misapply this cultural practice negatively and unacceptably, leading to the harassment of some young women.
We wish to clearly state that reports circulating on social media alleging that rape and widespread atrocities occurred during the festival are false and misleading. No incidents of rape were recorded.
The situation involved the harassment of two young women by individuals who took advantage of the occasion to act irresponsibly. The leadership of the Ozoro Kingdom immediately contacted the security agencies, which have brought the situation under control and are conducting investigations.
The leadership of Ozoro Kingdom strongly condemns any form of harassment or misconduct. Such behavior is not part of our culture and traditions and will not be tolerated. Appropriate steps are being taken to address the actions of those involved and to ensure future celebrations are conducted peacefully, respectfully, and orderly.
The leadership of the community concluded, urging the public to disregard false reports and refrain from spreading misinformation that may tarnish the image of their cherished cultural heritage.
In another report, on 20th March, 2026, the Nigeria Police Force Delta State Command Commissioner of Police, CP Aina Adesola, in a press statement, condemns the alleged sexual harassment allegations, commenced a full-scale investigation, and arrested a community head and five others while intensifying efforts to ensure justice is served.
SP. Bright Edafe, Delta State Police Command Spokesperson, noted that the Delta State Police Command has received with grave concern disturbing videos that emanated from Oramudu quarters, Ozoro, which capture sexual assault and molestation of young women in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area, during a purported local event.
The Command unequivocally condemns such acts in their entirety. Acts of sexual violence are criminal, inhumane, and constitute a grave violation of the fundamental rights and dignity of victims. The Commissioner of Police, upon receipt of the disturbing videos, ordered an immediate investigation into the incident. The Chief organiser, one Chief Omorede Sunday, and four other suspects have been arrested.
Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Aina Adesola, has ordered that the case be immediately transferred to the State Criminal Department (SCID) for further investigation. Tactical and investigative assets have been duly deployed with a clear mandate to identify, apprehend, and ensure the prosecution of all individuals found culpable.
The Command urges members of the public, particularly victims and witnesses, to come forward with any information that will aid ongoing investigations. All information provided will be treated with strict confidentiality and the highest level of professionalism.
The Commissioner of Police further appeals to residents of the State to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, while assuring that the Command remains fully committed to protecting lives, safeguarding the rights of all citizens, and maintaining public order.
The Delta State Police Command condemns this development in totality and assures that all those involved in these reprehensible acts will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
